Volunteer: Adopt a Highway Cleanup

Bluff Country Family Resources has adopted a stretch of Highway 16 between Hokah & Houston, MN. We have a scheduled clean up day coming up and would love for volunteers to assist with this project. Vest and trash bags will be provided. Additional details are below. 

Plan ahead

Volunteers should be in good physical health and mentally alert using good common sense about the safety of self and others.Volunteers should have an up-to-date tetanus shot.Do not bring any pets with you.All participants engaging in any Adopt a Highway activities must be at least 12 years of age and sign a permission slip.Every volunteer needs to wear an AAH safety vest at all times. Wear work clothes, heavy gloves, work boots or leather shoes, hat, long sleeves and long pants, sunscreen, insect/tick repellent. Bring water and a cell phone.

Guidelines when picking trash

Bring and wear your own gloves and use a trash picking tool whenever possible.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth while picking trash.After trash picking is complete, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol or disinfectant wipes.Do not volunteer if you are sick.

Safety first, safety always.

Volunteers should not pick up litter on medians between roadways, median on or off ramps, center of roundabouts, bridges, in tunnels, on overpasses or around other structures that may pose a danger.If a volunteer finds a weapon, DO NOT touch it.Call 911 to report it.Be aware of ticks, snakes and other animals you may encounter during the pick.Avoid poison ivy, wild parsnips, or other noxious weeds. Stay away from recently applied herbicides.Avoid abandoned containers, regulated waste and hazardous materials - DO NOT TOUCH

Volunteer: Event Staff - Run for the One 5k for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Bluff Country Family Resources is hosting a 5K on April 26th to help raise awareness of our organization's mission. We primarily need volunteers to work at stations along the route, and help set up/ tear down.

Station volunteers will help direct runners & walkers, as well as have water and first aid supplies on hand.

Volunteer day begins at 8am at Old Hickory Park, 1200 Jonathan Lane, La Crescent, MN 55947.

A meal will be provided at the close of the event.

Bluff Country Family Resources, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) dedicated to providing high-quality services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Houston County, MN, and surrounding communities. We began as Houston County Women's Resources in 1984. Information about our specific program services is located on the program’s website at bluffcountry.org.

Our mission at BCFR is to provide community education and non-judgmental, confidential crisis intervention, advocacy, support, and resources to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and those experiencing housing insecurity due to violence.

Board Member Responsibilities

Serve a minimum of one (2) two-year term on the Board. After the initial two-year term, members have the option to re-commit to their directorship on a year-by-year basis for up to a total of 6 years. 

Attend all board meetings. 

Dedicate 1-2 hours of volunteer time per month to BCFR as a director, 3-6 hours per month for executive committee members. 

Review executive director performance and compensation on an annual basis. 

The Board of Directors has two subcommittees. Each board member is expected to participate in at least one (1) of these subcommittees. Subcommittees should meet at least once between board meetings and be prepared to present updates.

The Executive Committee (President, President-Elect, Treasurer, Secretary) meets to discuss matters of budget, finance, and personnel. The Fundraising and Outreach Committee meets to discuss matters of planning fundraisers, soliciting donations, community outreach events, community education, and public relations. 

Stay informed about board matters, come prepared for meetings, review and comment on minutes and reports, review and approve policies, and discuss and vote on issues that affect the organization. 

Advocate for the organization by adhering to bylaws, policies, and procedures, and understanding our mission, ongoing activities, services, finances, and operating environment. 

Actively engage in creating and carrying out the strategic plan and organizational goals.
